While interning at the Quarto Group, I had the opportunity to work on a number of book covers for one of the company's imprints, New Shoe Press.
The books I worked on had already been design and published by the company, but were selected to be redesigned for New Shoe Press. I was asked to help out with the new cover designs. The covers themselves were formatted by the art director in charge of the project, but I got to chose the colors, patterns, and images used on the cover. There were four different types of books, and eight different templates, two for each type.
For each cover, I had to go through the book itself and find nice images that I thought would work well on the cover. Once I had several selected, I would place them into the template and match colors and patterns to the image, then compare to see which images and colors looked best. I then would chose my favorite for each template and organize a selection of covers into a presentation file that I would share with my supervisors and the editors in charge of the project. I would present about eight books at a time, with two cover designs for each.
While I presented, my supervisors gave me feedback on the designs, things that they liked and what they thought could use a change or a touch up. They also chose which cover would work best for the book. For the most part, the covers needed minimal editing before I sent them on.
During my time interning, I worked on around 25 books for New Shoe Press, which means I made over 50 different cover designs. Looking back, it seems like a lot, but while I was working on them, it didn't seem like too much or too overwhelming, and I found that I really enjoyed looking through the different books and figuring out how best to show its content in the cover. I was really proud of the way that my designs turned out.
I created a lot of covers for this project, and here are some of my favorites.
